Crystal Downs - Hole 11, Par 3, 184 Yards

It is on this hole when Crystal Downs turns from a links style course into something more like you would find in the north woods of Michigan. The rest of the back nine (except for 18) wind through the hardwood forest.

The Tee

There is no place to miss on this hole. Anything short will roll back down into the valley. Anything too far right will be out of bounds. Anything left will be in the junk or in the bunker. Anything long is basically dead. Pick what club you think is correct and then add at least one.

The Green

You can't really tell from the picture but this green slopes severely from back to front. Right where the shadow from the tree is a tier that leads down to the front pin position (shown in this picture). If you are long and the pin is in the front you might as well give up trying to stop the ball on the green. It will roll right off the front. We tried this a couple of times and were never even close. You almost have to putt off the green into the rough/fringe to get to the front hole location if you are past the pin. Even balls that are pin high but are not struck on the correct line may roll off the front of the green (like mine did).

This hole is very similar to hole number 17 at Ohio State University's Scarlet course, also designed by Dr. MacKenzie. The hole at OSU was redesigned because the green was too severely sloped in the opinion of the NCAA but no such redesign has occurred at Crystal Downs.
